Kids and gadget

I lately have been writing about relationship. Because I love talking about my opinions, so when I see some relation, I start to think why, how, etc.

Gadget that I mainly focus on is ipad or iphone. Name all the tablets or smartphones that you know.. All these gadgets.

I don't understand sometimes why some people are so impressed about the ability of little kids to use a gadget. Know how to unlock the screen, select what games they want to play and all. Yeah, wow, when we were young we didn't know how to use all these gadgets. But hey! Did all these things even existed? No right? It's not that hard anyway. Why won't people impressed when these little kids recognize the person holding them, the voice, or the smell of a blanket. It's much more amusing.

On the other hand, it's not like they know how the touch screen works, or how a game is made, the system and all. Exactly. To me, these gadgets don't allow the kids to think. They're all an illusion of what they exactly want. Something moving, colorful. It's just an imaginary. They can't touch, feel, or smell. The visual are all made according to their demand.

For instance, if a kid were exposed to play with a caterpillar. Which I did in primary school.. We had to observe, does it produce stinky gas, how they grow up, we had to make a hypothesis on why during certain period, the growth was like this and that. It's not an imaginary. We don't have any expectation, we did not know what will happen tomorrow. The caterpillar may die, or may even turn into a cocoon.

On top of that, alhamdulillah I grew up with Play Station, Nintendo DS, or PSP. Yep. I played all those games. But it didn't cause any addiction to me. Maybe because of the games, there are many valuable lesson I gained, like team work or patience. And we learnt about discipline too, we can't play more than a certain period. But what happens today? Try to take the ipad from these kids and see what happen.

And yes I don't deny there are few "clever" games (as how the developer claims) like puzzle, or learning the ABCs, or counting, in those gadgets. What else? That's all right. We know the harm of gadgets, the wave it produces, how harmful it is for our vision, not to mention about addiction as I mentioned earlier. But who cares? We are willing to sacrifice something much more valuable for a gadget.

Because of the price, a gadget has somehow become a symbolic of wealth. I once saw three little siblings, the eldest was around 7 y/o. The kids had an ipad for each. Seriously? My brother and I used to even share a chewing gum. We can actually use these gadgets as a family game. Like the board games. Use it as a tool for bonding, instead of an individual personal belongings.

No I'm not saying it is totally bad. All of my family members almost have one for each as well. What's important is moderation. If we know what exactly we're doing, know the limitation, insya Allah nothing will go wrong. Maybe as these addicting kids grow up, we can stop them from getting everything they want, and they will grow up into a better person. The possibility is there.

Since we can't play any role towards growing future generation, we can try to fix ourselves. Let the parents do and always be optimistic. For example, we can avoid using phone when we are socializing, or as simple as saying hello to our neighbour! I hope I can contribute towards a better future. Amin
